What's Going on in History?
TOPICS FOR THE TABLE
Sometimes the plans just do not work out like you thought. That is how many of our founding fathers felt about the Articles of Confederation. This was our nation’s first plan of government.
The Americans were actually in the middle of fighting a war with Great Britain when the Articles were constructed. After being ignored by the national government of Great Britain, they wanted to make sure that their needs would not be overpowered by the national government.
The Articles gave the majority of power to the state governments. The new citizens believed that having the majority of power closer to home would mean that they would be more likely to get what they wanted. They feared that their voice would easily be overpowered with a strong national government. (Think back to our examples in class of RED-RED-RED/BLUE-BLUE-BLUE and the choosing of lunch by homeroom or whole grade level)
What problems came about because of the national government’s weaknesses? How did this end up making the whole country weak?
