Welcome to 5th grade Physical Education

Congratulations students on your hard work in your elementary years!  Now it is time for you to learn how the B.A.R.K. like a BCMS DAWG!  The BCMS student expectations are:

               Be prepared

                   Act responsibly

                       Respect everyone

                            Keep safe

Homework:  I recommended every student participate in 60 total minutes of physical activity every day.  I also recommend students eat a balance diet (follow the food guide pyramid) everyday and always eat breakfast.  Due to our classroom being outside, students should stay well hydrated and dress appropriately for the different weather conditions.

Punish work: To be written 10 times unless otherwise specified by myself.  If the student should misplace the paragraph that is to be written, it is:

Any behavior that interferes with a student’s ability to learn, any other students ability to learn, or the teachers ability to teach is not allowed.  Student behavior that is disruptive to others, produces off task responses, or requires the teacher to stop teaching to attend to the behavior is breaking a rule.

If the students are given lunch detention, they are suppose to go to lunch for 15 minutes and then attend lunch detention in the 5th grade computer lab.

Physical education classes are one of the settings where students get harassed or bullied the most.  I try my very best for the students to feel safe in my class.   The biggest problem that I have noticed is that the students talk to each other very disrespectfully.  Therefore, I have established a rule that no one is allowed to say, "shut up" in my class.  They will do punish work for this offense.  I hope that this will help solve the problem.  Furthermore, if there is a conflict (arguing or bullying) in class, the students involved will immediately complete a conflict resolution form that I have created and then discuss with me what they have written in hopes to resolve the conflict.  If this conflict is not resolvable, then the matter will be handled by Mrs. Clark.

On August 20th the students will attend the kick off Project LEAD ceremony.  And in the months to follow the students will be receiving instruction by the district attorneys about the court system and in December they will participate in a mock trail.  The students will be a great time participating in and learning about the program.

In September, there will a walk-a-thon held in order to raise money for the 5th grade physical education department.  Physical education is a new program for the 5th grade and is still in the process of purchasing equipment for the program.  Students are not required to participate, however last year students had a great time participating.

During the school year the students will participate in two types of activities that will "focus on fitness" and will "focus on skill development".  The students are required to wear their pedometer to class daily in order to keep track of the steps they have taken everyday.  Students are not required, however should be getting a minimum of 10,000 steps daily in order to lead an active life.  The students will participate in the Presidential Physical Fitness Testing that will occur twice during the school year.  These tests are designed to provide the student (and their parents) with information about the student’s current physical condition.  As you probably have heard, the childhood obesity rate is steadily climbing and we need to take a stand in order to change these conditions.

**I have included two websites that will provide you with information on what an adequate physical activity level is and on what types of foods are healthy as well as the amounts of food that are sufficient enough for children your child’s age.
